Fulham vs Wigan Preview

Fulham are looking to go within touching distance of the playoffs once again with a win against improving Wigan Athletic this weekend. Fulham will be without Ryan Fredericks after his red card against Birmingham last weekend.

Fulham have been on the brink of the top 6 all season however they have struggled to break into the playoff places. Slavisa Jokanovic has his side playing some of the best football they have played in recent memory with the team averaging the highest possession percentage in The Championship.

New whites signing Gohi Bi Cyriac could make his first start this weekend. A welcome addition for Fulham after the departures of Matt Smith and Cauley Woodrow last week left Fulham with just 1 senior striker in Chris Martin.

Cyriac is something Fulham have been lacking all season, a clinical penalty taker. The Cottagers have missed an astonishing seven out of nine penalties they have been awarded this season costing them vital points that would have put them into the top six had they converted all of their spot kicks.

Playoffs aren’t out of reach yet for Fulham. However things are getting more difficult as the gap widens. As it stands Fulham are 6 points adrift of 6th place. But if they are to continue breathing down Sheffield Wednesday’s necks they will have to pick up 3 points on Saturday.

Wigan come to Craven Cottage trying to fight against relegation. The Lancashire side have hit one of their best runs of form this season only losing one of their last four games.

New Wigan signing Omar Bogle has adapted quickly to life in the Championship scoring a brace against Norwich City in a 2-2 draw.

Bogle could be the key to Wigan’s survival as he can score the goals he has been lacking this season. Wigans offence has been their downfall this season scoring the lowest amount of goals in the league this season.

Meanwhile The Latics’ defence has been solid conceding only 35 goals which is better than 3rd place Reading. If Wigan can start scoring goals then they should be able to avoid the drop this season.

This weekends’ clash should be a lot more evenly matched than the teams league position suggests. Both teams have everything to play for, with Wigan hitting their best form yet this season. Fulham may struggle to make up ground on Sheffield Wednesday in their race for the playoffs.
